Experience
more than you bargained for

Traveling is so much more than looking at art and artifacts and dinning out - though I cannot argue that those are some of my favorite things to do.  Traveling is about meeting locals and experiencing local culture in a way only they can share with you. And while you have a perfectly planned itinerary with us, remember to make some friends.

1. Talk to you hotel concierge or shared stay host. Since places change all the time, they will have the latest information on where to go and what to see.

2. Your drivers are your friends. I know its hard if you don't speak the local language, but most drivers speak a little bit of English and can show you some unique spots - that's how I had gado gado at a road-side cart in Bali that tasted out of this world and fed 3 people for $2 total!

3. Sit at the bar for dinner - this is especially great if you're traveling alone or in a small group. Wait servers are busy running around managing multiple tables, but the bar staff get a few breaks in between orders and are generally happy to share tips on what's hip and trending. And trust me, they know!

4. Look up from your device (phone, tablet or laptop). If you're staying in a hotel with a lobby go use the WiFi there to research your next stop. But take the time to see who's coming and going. The other hotel guests could be like you. And if they are checking in smile and look open to conversation. Check in can be a long wait and you can make friends along the way.

5. Pick up a guide book, read blogs, and ask friends before you go. Its amazing how much information is out there on the places you want to visit. Years ago before going to Europe my friends gifted "Bizarre Europe" a travel guide - I went to all of the weird places I could in my destinations. Now, I look for obscure blogs and always turn to Atlas Obscura for inspiration and ideas for my next itinerary.
