The city I have called my home for about 20 years (on and off). I have had a love/ hate relationship with LA over the years. And most of it because I live here - and like any place you live, it can eventually lose its luster. But even as we hit our snags, LA is still one of my favorite cities on the planet.
Yes. LA is big and can seem quite unruly to the visitor. And it has all the glitz of Hollywood - for better or for worse. But LA also has nature, culture and community. You just need to know where to look. And over my years here I have looked. Like New York, when friends or family come to visit I love to show off the best the city has to offer - it’s like introducing them to my new boyfriend. I want them to know all the good parts and mask over all the blemishes. And we are in LA after all, blemishes can be nipped and tucked ;-)
When I first moved here for college, I didn't think I would last past the 4 years. And I didn't feel like I really belonged until year 7. Even when I was already settled into a job, had a solid group of friends around me and was living with my boyfriend, I sometimes felt like I didn't quite belong. And then it hit me. As I was driving home along on La Brea boulevard past Pinks and Jet Rag, this is home.
So whether you’re a beach person or a city dweller. If you’re here for the food scene or the Hollywood scene. This city has the diversity to show you a good time.
And if you’ve never been here, go do the Hollywood walk and then sit in traffic for an hour to go to Santa Monica (which is only a few miles away). Experience the lines at Disneyland or Universal Studios. But know that when you’re ready to do something different. To really see what LA is like. Then come back to me and I’ll point you where to go, what to try, and where to chill in this busy and loud city. Because if you’re looking for a morning hike with a view or a view of the setting sun with a cocktail or just get your culture on, LA has it. You may just need a car to do it all.
